Trio of awards at EEF Ceremony

Caparo Industries Plc was delighted to secure the first prize for its Environmental Efficiency programme at the Midland’s EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2014, held on Thursday, 5th February at the Belfry. During the same ceremony Hub Le Bas, a national distributor of specialist steel products, was also named runner-up in the Business Growth Category, while Caparo Precision Strip, a premium precision steel strip manufacturer, narrowly missed the top spot in the Export Category.

Caparo Industries Plc is one of the largest privately owned enterprises in the Midlands, focused primarily on the manufacture and supply of engineered and steel products and services. With an extensive portfolio, ranging from automotive and aviation components, carbon composites, forged parts and assemblies, performance braking and actuation systems and materials testing services, through to steel tubes, steel wire, merchant bar and precision steel strip, the business serves a wide variety of customers, both in the United Kingdom and overseas.

During last week’s Midlands EEF Future Manufacturing Awards Caparo Industries Plc was named as a regional winner in the Sustainable Manufacturing category. The judges were impressed with the manner in which the business brought “…its day-to-day management skills of continuous improvement and used them to tackle energy reduction. Clear targets were set and achieved, with 3 of 4 targets over-achieving by more than 100%. The judges thought this to be a great story of common sense and strong leadership.”

At the same time Caparo’s specialist distribution business – Hub Le Bas – was also recognised for its commendable business growth in challenging market conditions. Albeit naming it a runner up in the Business Growth category, the judges were impressed by the business’ defined “growth strategy with clear planning, process and investment that had led to tangible results”. They cited Hub Le Bas’ clear understanding of the value of existing and new customers to the business, and were very impressed by the approach taken to encourage management and staff across the company.

Caparo Precision Strip, the West Bromwich based manufacturer and supplier of precision steel trip, made it a hat trick for Caparo on the day when it was also pronounced runner up in the Export Category. The business was commended for having a clear motivation to develop a new export strategy, to manage risk and secure the company’s future. Faced with European competition, emerging low cost manufacturers in Eastern Europe and China, and a decline in the price of raw materials the business implemented a well-integrated plan utilising internal and external resources.

Douglas Dawson, Chief Operating Officer of Caparo Industries Plc, commented: “As a business we are delighted to have been recognised during this prestigious regional ceremony not once, not twice, but three times. But what is even more important to me is that this achievement raises the profile of our manufacturing businesses and the sector as a whole. Collectively we contribute a significant part of the UK economy, and I would like to thank the EEF for working tirelessly to promote our success stories. Congratulations also to the entire Caparo team for the outstanding results and a fantastic achievement on the day.”
